Graphic Chat:
Between the cyberspace and the wall.

There is a generation of Cuban designers that in the last years has been more in contact with the works of their colleagues through online messages than meeting in the same physical space. Through this ephemeral and informal way they have approached and expressed to their friends and colleagues their moods, account of tribulations, expectations of life and new projects. In a sort of naïve and ultramodern Mail Art, these young Cuban’s designers had consolidated a feasible network that allows them to be in contact and interchange messages in real time. However, the organizers of this event have decided to move this informal chat between artists that share the same professional interests and common background to a less virtual space: from the chat room to the gallery.
The importance of the Cuban poster in the international graphic arena and the possibilities of expression that this media provides to designers turns out to be a convenient means to set up this communication. The beta version of this exhibition is intended to travel annually between some of the cities that have become part of the new Cuban cartography, as the moderators of this chat try to follow the trace periodically to the work done by this particular generation. These works are created under diverse circumstances and esthetic universes, but share principles of proximity and similitude, even though they have been influenced by different visual, social and cultural environments in which they were created.
The chat is open. We believe that art has always been a bridge, a common place, an embrace.

Entre el ciberespacio y la pared.

Hay una generación de diseñadores cubanos que en los últimos años ha mantenido más contacto con la obra de sus contemporáneos a través de mensajes online que reunidos en un mismo espacio físico. A través de éste medio efímero e informal han expresado a sus amigos y colegas sus estados de ánimo, sus tribulaciones diarias, sus esperanzas y sus nuevos proyectos. En una suerte de versión inconsciente y ultramoderna de Mail Art, estos jóvenes diseñadores cubanos han consolidado un network que les permite estar en contacto e intercambiar mensajes en tiempo real. Sin embargo, los organizadores de este evento hemos decidido trasladar esta conversación informal entre artistas que comparten un interés profesional y un background común a un espacio menos virtual: del Chat room a la sala de exposiciones. La importancia del cartel cubano dentro del arte gráfico internacional y las posibilidades de expresión que ofrece lo convierten, a nuestro juicio, en el vehículo ideal para esta comunicación. Al proponer la versión beta (de prueba) de una muestra transitoria, que pueda viajar anualmente entre algunas de las ciudades de la nueva cartografía cubana, los moderadores de este Chat intentamos seguirle el rastro periódicamente a la obra de una generación que crea bajo circunstancias y universos estéticos muy diferentes, pero que comparten ciertos principios de proximidad y similitud, aún cuando sus obras estén influidas por el universo visual y sociocultural en el que viven. La comunicación está abierta. Confiamos en que el arte siempre ha sido un puente, un lugar común, un abrazo.
